Native American High School Broadcast Workshop

The Andy Harvey Native American Broadcast Workshop

Flagstaff, Arizona –  News stories about Native Americans should be told by Native Americans. That is a vision that Andy Harvey had for Native America. In memory of this accomplished individual, the Native American Broadcast Journalism Workshop has been named after him to encourage the growth of Native Americans in television and radio broadcasting.

In an effort to encourage more Native American students to seek careers in the broadcast industry, Northern Arizona University has combined with broadcast industry sponsors to host a Native American High School Broadcast Journalism Workshop from June 14-20, 2015. Native American High School students are encouraged to visit the workshop’s website at and apply.

The high school students whose essays are selected will learn how to create professional quality radio and television productions during the week they spend on NAU’s Flagstaff Campus and will experience what college life is like.

The students will have access to state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment used by college students in NAU’s School of Communication. During their stay, students will attend pre-production, production and post-production work sessions with NAU faculty and staff. The students will also meet broadcast industry professionals and visit media production and broadcast facilities during the workshop.

First preference will go to high school juniors and seniors who complete the application and write competitive essays. Deadline for applications is April 17, 2015.

For further information and an application, visit, or call 928-523-2232 to request an application by mail.

The workshop is supported by the Arizona Broadcasters Association, NAU School of Communication, the Gannett Foundation, NAU Native American Cultural Center, Native Public Media, KTNN Radio, NAU’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and .
